Rand blev i slutet på the Great Hunt indragen i Tel'aran'rhiod av Ba'alzamon, som vi numera vet är Ishamael aka Moridin. Här möts de båda i en duell, där Rand får ett sår som ännu inte vill läka, och varken Nynaeve, Verin, Moiraine, Alanna, Samitsu eller Flinn har lyckats hela det.

"Moiraine says Nynaeve must have done something, or you wouldn't have lived till we carried you to Verin, but Nynaeve says she was too frightened to light a candle. There is . . . something wrong with your wound.

Vad Rands sår har med Smittans natur att göra blir så mycket intressantare när vi vet att Ba'alzamon alltid använder the True Power, och att staven han bär verkligen är skapad av the True Power är högst sannolikt. såret kan inte helas eftersom såret är gjort av the True Power.
Padan Fain som långt senare (i A Crown of Swords) skär Rand med Shadar Logoth dolken precis där Ba'alzamon sårade Rand med staven sätter lite ljus på teorin. Flinn analyserar såret:

"Not much. I couldn't really touch what's wrong. I sort of sealed them away from him, for a time, anyhow. It won't last. They're fighting each other, now. Maybe they'll kill off each other, while he heals himself the rest of the way." Sighing, he shook his head. "On the other hand, I can't say that they won't kill him. But I think he has a better chance than he did."

I slutet av Winter's Heart, där Rand och Nynaeve använder Choedan Kal för att rena Saidin från the Taint får vi reda på att the Taint verkligen har en motsats:

The male and female halves of the True Source were alike and unalike, attracting and repelling, fighting against each other even as they worked together to drive the Wheel of Time. The taint on the male half had its opposite twin, too. The wound given him by Ishamael throbbed in time with the taint, while the other, from Pain's blade, beat counterpoint in time with the evil that had killed Aridhol.

Det som står är dock att the Taint har en motsats och den är Mashadar. Det står inte att the True Power har en motsats. Men om vi nu vet att Rands sår är True Power, och att True Power har samma effekt på Mashadar som the Taint. När i nu vet detta, så är det ganska mycket som att talar för att the Taint egentligen är The True Power.

En annan detalj som stärker teorin om hur the Taint är the True Power's är hur de som leder Saidin har dött.

Since the time of Madness, no man has been able to channel the Power without eventually going completely, horribly mad; and then, even if he has learned some control, dying from a wasting sickness which causes the sufferer to rot alive -- a sickness caused, as is the madness, by the Dark One's taint on saidin.

Liknelsen mellan det som rörs av the Taint och Mashadar är alltså att det snabbt ruttnar bort.
* Frågan är om detta inte är det slutgiltiga priset som Moridin och Moghedien talar om.

Att Rands sår kommer att läkas nu när Mashadar och the True Power slåss mot varandra verkar inte alls troligt. Om de är varandras motsatser och likheter, precis som Saidin och Saidar är sina, så vore det väldigt opraktiskt om dessa på något sätt skulle ut varandra och på detta sätt neutralisera ondskan. Om the True Source består av till hälften Saidin och Saidar skall man nog förrutsätta att samma sak gäller för Mashadar och the True Power.
Det var alltså inte det att Mashadar och the True Power neutraliserade varandra i slutet på Winter's Heart, utan det var i och med att brunnen, Shadar Logoth, förstörelse som gjorde att varken Mashadar eller the True Power kunde finnas kvar.

* Liksom man drar the One Power ur Saidin och Saidar, så dras the True Power från Mashadar och the Dark One. Alltså måste Robert Jordan snart ge oss ett nytt namn för den källa som the Dark One hämtar sin.
